2026 Lexus ES Debuts With Comprehensive Redesign and Major Upgrades


Lexus just pulled the wraps off the 2026 ES at Auto Shanghai 2025, and it’s safe to say—nobody saw this coming. Once the understated “girl next door” of the lineup, the ES has transformed into one of the most striking sedans Lexus has ever designed.

But this isn’t just a glow-up. The real story lies under the surface, where the all-new ES emerges as a true global model built on a flexible platform.

It will be available with both hybrid and fully electric (BEV) powertrains, giving drivers more options than ever. For the first time, the ES also offers both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, signaling a bold step forward for Lexus.

Powertrains for Every Driver

The 2026 Lexus ES is built on a reengineered TNGA GA-K platform, now tailored to accommodate both hybrid and fully electric drivetrains. Staying true to its identity, the ES remains a luxury-first sedan, with promised upgrades to ride comfort and cabin serenity.

Still, Lexus is turning up the dial on performance, hinting at “sharp, intuitive steering” and “acceleration and deceleration.” That marks a noticeable shift toward a more dynamic driving experience.

At launch, the lineup includes three trims, though Lexus hasn’t released official power figures yet. The 350h leads the hybrid charge, running on the sixth-generation 2.5-liter system familiar to Lexus fans.

Its new eAxle merges the control unit and transaxle, trimming weight and making space for a more robust battery setup. This hybrid is paired with an Electronic CVT, which is currently the only gas-assisted option.

The EV duo includes the 350e and the range-topping 500e. The 350e sends power to the front wheels, while the 500e steps up with all-wheel drive.

Both sit atop underfloor battery packs to keep weight low and cabin space generous. The 500e also features Lexus’ intelligent AWD, which can shift torque from 100:0 to 0:100 across the axles.

“This enhances acceleration from a standstill, provides greater handling stability and contributes to great energy efficiency,” says Lexus.

On the topic of efficiency, Lexus estimates the ES 350e can travel up to 300 miles on a single charge, on 19-inch wheels, no less.

Delivering comfort and luxury at an attainable price has always been the ES’s sweet spot, and Lexus has doubled down on that formula. The cabin was already spacious, but a three-inch stretch in wheelbase makes it even roomier, with improved seat positioning for easier entry and exit.

Lexus knows true luxury isn’t just about flashy tech—it’s about how a space feels. The interior embraces a minimalist design, with slimmed-down trim elements to create a lighter, more open atmosphere.

More glass surface area brings in extra natural light, giving the cabin an airy, serene vibe. Materials like synthetic leather and layered bamboo, crafted using 3D printing, add a refined, sustainable touch.

The driver’s space is more focused and modern, anchored by a 12.3-inch digital display. A larger 14-inch touchscreen features the latest Lexus Interface system with split-screen capability and smoother navigation.

Connectivity is a given, with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and dual Bluetooth support. And of course, a premium Mark Levinson Surround Sound System is available for those who take their playlists seriously.

For buyers in North America, the standout offering is the Executive Package on the ES 350e FWD Luxury model. This upgrade brings reclining rear seats, a passenger-side ottoman, massaging functions, and seat heating and ventilation in the back—amenities usually reserved for cars twice the price.

What It’ll Cost and When It’s Coming

Lexus has confirmed that the new ES will go on sale next year, with full specs and pricing to be announced closer to launch. Until then, we’re left waiting for the fine print.

For reference, the 2025 ES starts at $43,215 and stretches to $53,505 for the top hybrid trim. The hybrid variants will likely stay within a similar range, but BEVs often carry a premium.

Still, with today’s shifting market, predicting prices a week out is tricky, let alone a year from now. So for now, your guess is as good as ours.
