Modding existing Apple products has become rather popular on Bilibili of late. Last month, someone demonstrated a working foldable iPhone based on the parts of other clamshell handsets. Subsequently, another Bilibili member has modified the 24-inch iMac by removing its recognisable display chin. To recap, the 24-inch iMac houses its logic board and Apple M1 SoC beneath its display, presumably to mitigate any heat dissipation issues.
Additionally, the design sticks with the design language of earlier iMac models, for better or worse. On the one hand, it allows people to recognise the all-in-one as an iMac without an Apple logo emblazoned on its front. On the other hand, its front design dates from the mid-2000s, with a direct line between the iMac G5 and the current 24-inch model.
Conversely, the modded 24-inch iMac has its logic board placed in its rear, freeing up the display to sit within uniform bezels. The mod highlights a potential shortcoming with the design though, with waste heat now direct against the display rather than beneath it. Potentially, this heat could shorten the display’s lifespan, although Apple has built the Studio Display in a similar manner. It remains to be seen when Apple will release another iMac, with summer 2022 rumours of three 27-inch prototypes the last time anything iMac-related surfaced online.
