40th Annual Newark Valley Apple Festival this weekend

JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) — The 40th Annual Newark Valley Apple Festival is set to kick off Saturday.

This fall’s family event is a celebration of local produce and history. Director of the Bement-Billings Farmstead Ed Nizalowski said the Farmstead has been around for 200 years.

“William Billings comes along in 1899 and his granddaughter deeds the house along with an acre and a half of land in 1977 to the newly formed Newark Valley Historical Society,” Nizalowski said. “It was open as a living history center in 1980.”

Festival-goers can expect a weekend of crafts, live music, apple desserts and some festival favorites include tours of the 1800’s Farmhouse, apple pressing, blacksmithing and black powder public shoot.

“With admission, there are free tours of the Farmhouse,” Nizalowski said. “The house goes back to the early 1800s and it was added on in 1840 so you get to see two different eras when you go inside. We also have demonstrations of open-hearth cooking and there will be guides there to explain the various things you see.”

Nizalowski said new at the festival this year is a scarecrow contest along with festival staple apple dessert contest.

“Scarecrow contest is something new, we decided to add this as something different,” Nizalowski said.

The Newark Valley Apple Festival will be held on Oct. 2 and Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bement-Billings Farmstead.

Masks are required inside all of the buildings at the festival.
