Android Auto’s 14.1 Update Is Now Rolling Out on a Wider Scale

If you have a car (particularly a relatively recent model year) and you have a smartphone (essentially everyone), then you probably know a little something about platforms like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Once you get used to either of those platforms, the modern driving experience feels like it is missing something without them.

Android Auto is quite naturally our platform of choice, and if you happen to be someone who uses it on a nearly daily basis, then you’re going to be really happy to hear that the app’s version 14.1 update is now rolling out widely, after being restricted to a beta release for a bit. Let’s talk about it.

Android Auto 14.1 Isn’t the Most Exciting of Updates, but Likely Brings Needed Bug Fixes

I don’t use Android Auto. It isn’t by choice, but simply because the cars that I get to drive here and there are much older models and simply don’t come with that kind of functionality (in fact, Android wasn’t even a thing at the time that they were manufactured). However, I do find myself wishing that I had that functionality due to the numerous occasions I want to play music or reference Maps when at the wheel.

However, for those who do use Android Auto on a regular basis, I come with good news and my overwhelming envy. You’ll be glad to know that now, after spending some time on the beta track since last month, Android Auto 14.1 is now available on a wider scale, for any users who might be interested. You can get it on the Google Play Store.

You might notice that the new update isn’t available for you yet, but that shouldn’t be too much of a surprise, as that’s how things tend to go for Android Auto updates. While we wish it could just be one global update, Google seems to like expanding the radius of the release gradually over weeks. I’d generally expect that before the end of the week, it’ll reach most people in the world.

I hate to burst your bubble, but this isn’t one of those major updates that comes with several UI changes and new features. On the contrary, it doesn’t seem to bring that much to the table, which likely means that there are probably just some performance tweaks and bug fixes happening behind the scenes, but I don’t think you should turn your nose up at an update that will make the app run better.

However, it might be setting the foundation for some pretty major Android Auto features that seem to be in the works. For one, Google Gemini is going to be making its way to Android Auto at some point, likely in the near future. On top of that, the app is also gearing up to bring temperature and defrost controls, giving you even more power over your vehicle. Oh, and Android Auto now already supports games on your car’s screen.
