You have tons of options as far as action cameras go, but Insta360’s cameras remain solid for a few reasons. Now, the Insta360 X5 is finally here, and it’s the toughest we’ve seen to date from the company.
Insta360 has just announced its new flagship 360° camera, the Insta360 X5. And it’s a pretty awesome product. The X5 features larger 1/1.28-inch sensors compared to the previous X4 model—according to Insta360, these larger sensors, combined with a new processing system dubbed the “Triple AI Chip” (composed of one 5nm AI chip and two imaging chips), mean that we should have vastly improved camera performance, particularly in low-light conditions. The camera itself supports 360° video recording at up to 8K resolution at 30 frames per second (fps). It also offers 5.7K resolution at up to 60fps and 4K resolution at up to 120fps.
A new “PureVideo” mode utilizes AI-based processing for noise reduction and dynamic range optimization specifically for low-light shooting scenarios. The camera’s HDR capabilities have been updated to support 5.7K at 60fps. And for still photography, the X5 can capture approximately 72-megapixel (11904×5952) 360° photos.
We have a first here, and it’s the fact that we now have user-replaceable lenses. The lenses themselves are made from a new, more scratch-resistant glass formulation, so you should go more time between lenses without having to replace them. If a lens is damaged and you do need to replace it, though, you can purchase a Replacement Lens Kit and swap the lens module yourself. Swapping out the lenses on the X4 or previous models wasn’t impossible, but you did need a certain degree of knowhow in order to not break the whole camera. With the X5, this step should be way, way easier.
The X5 features an IP68 rating, allowing it to be submerged in water up to 49 feet (15 meters) without a separate dive case. The camera body incorporates a built-in wind guard using a multi-layer mesh design, which is supposed to reduce wind noise in audio recordings and is complemented by updated audio processing algorithms. In terms of battery life, we have a 2,400 mAh cell, which Insta360 claims provides up to 135 minutes of recording time at 5.7K/30fps, or up to 185 minutes using a power-saving “Endurance Mode” at 5.7K/24fps. The battery supports fast charging, too, reaching 80% capacity in a claimed 20 minutes with a compatible charger. If it’s true, it’s pretty good.

Insta360 X4 Camera Review: A Lot of Camera for a Lot of Money
The Insta360 X4 takes the guesswork out of aiming your camera because it covers everything around you.
On the software side, the X5 is adding a new “InstaFrame Mode.” When it’s activated, the camera simultaneously records two files: a standard, flat-aspect-ratio video that is automatically framed (either following a fixed direction or keeping you in view) and ready for direct sharing, alongside the full 360° video file for later reframing and editing. There’s also a few new editing party tricks, including a one-tap dewarp function to correct fisheye distortion.
The Insta360 X5 will start at $549.99, just $50 more than its predecessor—not too shabby if this price increase is after tariffs. There’s also an Essentials Bundle available for $659.99. Make sure to check it out on the manufacturer’s website to learn more.
