Borderlands 4 is achieving a modern gaming miracle – it’s arriving early

The eagerly awaited Borderlands 4 shooter will arrive earlier than originally planned, the developer Gearbox has confirmed.

In a video post, Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford – who we recently saw at the Nintendo Switch game showcase – popped up to reveal Borderlands 4 is going to be unleashed on September 12 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

That’s 11 days earlier the originally announced September 23 release date, making the “mayhem-fuelled looter shooter” a rarity among modern video games that have often been blighted by delay after delay.

Pitchford eventually deleted his video, but only because he jumped the gun on the announcement, rather than the announcement being incorrect because Sony confirmed it too. Thankfully, the noted gaming leaker Wario64 captured and posted Pitchford’s announcement.

Earlier today Sony announced a State of Play stream dedicated to Borderlands 4 where gamers will be able to watch 20 minutes of gameplay for what’s expected to become one of the best PS5 games around.

“Back at February’s State of Play, we unveiled the game’s Launch Date Trailer, which showcased a taste of the explosive action, fearsome enemies, and powerful loot,” wrote Gearbox Software’s Creative Director Graeme Timmins.

“Since then, we’ve announced that Borderlands 4’s launch has moved up to September 12, 2025, meaning you’ll get to enjoy the looter shooter action even earlier.”

That State of Play will be streamed tomorrow, on April 30. We can’t wait!

Opinion

Naturally, gamers have taken this news to infer a potential release date for GTA 6.

Both games will be published by Take-Two Interactive. So, some gamers are wondering whether bumping up the launch date for Borderlands 4 could mean GTA 6 might follow not-too-long afterwards.

With a shared publisher, it’s possible Gearbox may now more than most about when Rockstar’s next juggernaut is on the way.

If the developer was looking for breathing room from a game that’s going to absolutely dominate the landscape for about twelve months, then this would be one way to go about it.

Or so the theory goes…
