LG washing machine error codes explained

It can be a seriously frustrating situation when your washing machine stops working efficiently.

Fortunately if you’re sporting an LG washing machine then you won’t need to second guess what might be wrong with your appliance. Instead, you’ll see an error code displayed on the device’s LCD panel, which tells you what’s going wrong.

So if you’re constantly seeing the fault code ie or 03 and are not sure what to do then we’re here to help. To avoid you having to search around for the manual, we’ve listed all of the LG washing machine error codes and explained what they mean, to help you see what’s really wrong with your machine.

Time for an upgrade? Our guide to the best washing machines features the top-rated appliances as tested by our experts.

Code ie (IE)

If you see the error code “ie” on your LG washing machine then this means that either the correct water level was not reached within eight minutes or the preset level was not reached within 20 minutes.

Fortunately, solving this isn’t difficult and requires you to check that the water supply valve is fully open. Then, check the inlet hose for any kinks of blockages which might be affecting the water reserve. If the valve is open and there are no obvious kinks in the hose then this means the inlet valve may need replacing.

Code ue (UE)

The error code ue stands for “unbalanced error” and simply shows that your laundry load is unbalanced in some way. To avoid this, ensure your washing machine is on a flat and stable surface to prevent titling. Then, ensure your laundry is evenly distributed in the drum and that you don’t overload (or underload) the machine either.

Code oe or 0e (OE)

Although the code is an “o” or “0”, it actually stands for drain error, whereby water is overflowing in your machine. To solve this, inspect the drain hose for clogs or kinks, and the drain pump for blockages.

Code FE

Following on from the above, the error code FE shows that water is overflowing beyond the safe limit. This, unfortunately, isn’t a quick and easy fix and may require the washing machine’s water inlet valve or water level sensor to be replaced.

Code PE

The PE error code stands for “pressure sensor error” as the pressure sensor assembly is likely malfunctioning and leading to incorrect water level readings. First, try restarting your washing machine from its main power supply (the classic turn it off and on again trick) to see if this clears the error code. If it persists, then the pressure sensor assembly will likely need to be replaced.

Code dE1 or dEI

If you see the error code dE1 or dEI on your LG washing machine then the door is either not fully closed or its switch is malfunctioning. The fix can be relatively easy and just requires you to ensure the door is securely shut before starting a cycle. You should also check for any loose electrical connections that could be getting in the way at the door switch.

However, if the problem persists then the door switch assembly may need replacing.

Code OPn

A common and easy to solve issue, OPn simply means the detergent drawer was opened during a cycle or it wasn’t fully closed when the washing machine started. To fix this, simply ensure the drawer is closed before starting a cycle and don’t open it during.

Code tE

If the thermistor on your LG washing machine is defective and therefore preventing proper temperature regulation, then you’ll see the tE code. To fix this, you’ll need to inspect the thermistor and replace it if it’s faulty, however this is quite a tricky process and shouldn’t be attempted if you aren’t confident.

Code LE

LE stands for Locked Motor Error and means the motor harness connections are loose or disconnected and have caused the motor to lock. A motor harness connects electrical components to the power source, and may need to be properly reattached. Alternatively, some wiring may be damaged and will need to be replaced.

Like other components, like the thermistor for example, you should only attempt to fix this yourself if you feel confident to do so.

Code EE

The EE code is displayed during the Load Test Mode and shows the EEPROM (in other words, the washing machine’s memory) is malfunctioning. LG actually says a simple restart may be enough to fix this issue, however if not then your washing machine may need a new control board.

Code PF

PF appears when there’s been a sudden power failure during a cycle. To fix this, check the power cord is plugged in or there hasn’t been a power cut in your home. Once solved, simply restart the machine and resume the cycle.

Code Sud

If you see the Sud error code then the washing machine has detected excessive detergent and has activated its Suds Reducing cycle which takes an additional two hours on top of your cycle. To avoid this in the first place, make sure you don’t put too much detergent in your machine’s drawer.

The washing machine should work to correct this automatically, however you can run an extra rinse cycle to help remove excess suds.

Code US or U5

This code isn’t actually a full U, but represents a vibration sensor error. Fixing this can be fairly easy, and requires you to either restart the washing machine or ensure it’s on a level surface. If these fixes don’t help, then you’ll need to contact LG support to have your sensor replaced.

Pump issues

Ed1

This code suggests that there might be a build-up of hardened detergent in the reservoir, which is in the appliance’s detergent drawer. To fix this, check and clean the detergent reservoir to avoid any build-up. You could also consider using liquid detergent over powders, to prevent hardening.

Ed2

An Ed2 error code represents an open circuit pump issue, where the level of liquid detergent hasn’t changed. Check the detergent drawer and the pump for any blockages and clogs.

Ed3

If the fabric softener in the detergent drawer did not decrease then you’ll see the Ed3 error code. This is likely because the softener compartment is clogged and needs cleaning. Also make sure you know where to put detergent in a washing machine so that you aren’t adding it to the wrong area.

Ed4

This code is similar to the above, and means the fabric softener level remained unchanged during the wash. If the softener compartment is clean and there aren’t any immediate clogs, then this could be a sign that the pump isn’t working properly and may need replacing.

Ed5

The Ed5 code means there’s been poor communication with the printed circuit board (PCB) which has caused the machine to malfunction. A simple restart should sort this out, however if the issue persists then you’ll likely need to contact LG support to inspect or even replace the PCB.

Vibration errors

V5

V5, or a slight variation of the “v”, means there’s a vibration sensor error. This could be caused by myriad reasons, so firstly you should restart the washing machine to see if it fixes itself. If the problem persists then there may be some loose or disconnected wiring or the vibration sensor may need replacing.

Wi-Fi errors

nE

The nE error code means there’s a connection issue between your machine and Wi-Fi. Try restarting your Wi-Fi router to ensure it’s working properly and ensure your washing machine is within its range. If the issue persists then you’ll need to contact LG for support.

nF

An nF code shows there’s an issue with your Wi-Fi modem within the washing machine. Try restarting the appliance and, if that still doesn’t work then you’ll need to contact a professional to fix it.

Code FF

FF stands for “frozen failure”, as the washing machine has detected freezing conditions. To resolve this, check the drain hose and pump for ice blockages and thaw them with warm water. You can also add some warm water into the drum to help unfreeze components.

If your washing machine displays FF often, then you should move the appliance to a warmer area, as exposure to freezing temperatures can affect the washing machine.
