7 Game Releases in May We’re Looking Forward To

Usually, spring is the time of year when the game releases start to ramp up until we get to the holidays, so strap in, it’s going to get even more wacky in the later months. For now, however, we’re going to focus on May, which will be a busy month with some potential instant classics hitting shelves. With developers having spent the winter months polishing their creations, gamers around the world are about to be treated to an eclectic mix of experiences that promise to devour our free time and dominate conversations across social media.

The games on this list range from AAA releases with budgets rivaling Hollywood blockbusters to innovative indie gems crafted by small but passionate teams with a new take on familiar ideas. Whether you’re a dedicated console warrior, a PC enthusiast with the latest hardware, or someone who enjoys gaming on the go, May has something special in store for every type of player.

Monster Train 2

A deckbuilding sequel with colorful characters

Monster Train 2 is a rogue-like deck-builder that lets the player take on various monsters and armies to take down Titans. Players must manage units, get boons, avoid demerits, and get as far as possible. In true rogue-like fashion, however, you will eventually trip and take a loss. No worries, though! Take your earnings from your last run and upgrade your gear and units to get back through and raise more HFIL (iykyk). They even added a new feature: Endless Run. Many original fans advocated for adding this, and the devs listened.

A sci-fi shooter where you take on a wave of destructive robots

Have you ever seen a game that looked so smooth in movement and combat that you immediately thought, “That would be a great speedrunning game!”? Let me introduce you to Metal Eden, a sci-fi FPS with movement that reminds me of Mirror’s Edge. Wall-running, jetpack gliding, ziplining, and even more options allow players to mold the battlefield to their whim. It won’t be easy, however, with the variety of enemies this game will throw at you, getting to humanity’s core won’t be easy.

Elden Ring: Nightreign

A new co-op adventure in Elden Ring lore

A standalone release set in the same setting, this new co-op adventure will allow up to three players. Elden Ring: Nightreign differs from typical Souls games, as it is more of a hero adventure than a character customization experience. Each hero has their flair and nods to the traditional adventure party roles: damage, range, tank. How to optimize each one is yet to be seen, but it’s still an interesting take on the Souls’ formula we’ve known for almost two decades.

TMNT: Tactical Takedown

A strategic take on the Turtles’ gameplay

I’m not sure how many TMNT turn-based games there are, which is why this is so intriguing. In TMNT: Tactical Takedown, an older group of Turtles takes on the remaining Foot Clan, eager to take over the city. However, this isn’t your usual Saturday morning Turtles, as it’s more based on the original comic run, targeted at older readers. As a TMNT fan, I will check out this game since its story focuses on each Turtle’s journey through a tactical RPG battle setting with an ever-changing arena based on the events that unfold during the battle.

Sonic Rumble

A new party game with the Sonic gang

Sonic and friends are here to play party-style games with you and 31 of your friends in Sonic Rumble. Well, the toy versions of your friends can be customized for everyone and will be updated while the title is live. Sonic Rumble is looking to celebrate the history of Sonic and SEGA throughout the years. There’s a pre-registration event currently underway, so take advantage of it to start early with some gear and make progress. But remember, you have to go fast to be at the top of the leaderboard by the end.

Doom: The Dark Ages

Take on this hellish prequel by ripping and tearing in (kinda) knightly armor

Doom: The Dark Ages is a prequel to the Doom (2016) game, which was a resounding hit. This new take on the Doom Slayer’s journey, which fills in the blanks of what happened before the demons were released upon the world, has that familiar ‘rip and tear’ feel but with a new aesthetic. Not only will players seem to have the traditional weapons at the Doom Slayer’s disposal, but some medieval-inspired ones as well. Also, I’m pretty sure there was a shot in the trailer where the player could mount a dragon, so that’s even more reason to anticipate this latest entry in the series.

Lost Soul Aside

A fast-paced action game that attempts to delight long-waiting fans

We’ve been waiting on this game, which first showed off a teaser back in 2017, with bated breath. This ultra-fast action-adventure aims to take on the genre’s other contenders, and from initial screens, it doesn’t appear to be an underdog. Save your sister and humanity by proxy in this alluring fantasy from a small development team published by Sony PlayStation. If the gameplay trailers don’t get you excited, then maybe the first day streams will, as I’m sure this will be a trending game upon release.
