Less than 24 hours after Apple’s legal defeat over its App Store model, Epic Games is wasting no time. For starters, Fortnite is set to return to the iOS App Store in the U.S. next week. Under the court’s order, Apple can no longer block apps from directing users to the web to purchase digital content. I’s also barred from collecting a 27% commission on those web-based sales that originate from App Store apps.
Meanwhile, Epic Games has announced two new business moves — one of which takes direct aim at Apple’s in-app purchase revenue model.
First, Epic Games announced that it will take 0% commission on the first $1 million of revenue generated through its store per app year. After the first $1 million in earnings, Epic will take a 12% commission.
While the Epic Games Store and Apple’s App Store aren’t direct competitors, Epic’s model invites comparison. Apple typically takes a 15–30% commission, with its Small Business Program reducing the rate to 15% on the first $1 million in revenue. Subscriptions also drop from 30% to 15% after the first year.
The other business move is something called Epic Games Store Webshops. This is effectively Epic Games helping developers steer users away from in-app purchases.
In June 2025, we are releasing a new feature enabling developers to launch their own webshops hosted by the Epic Games Store. These webshops can offer players out-of-app purchases, as a more cost-effective alternative to in-app purchases, where Apple, Google, and others charge exorbitant fees. With new legal rulings in place, developers will be able to send players from games to make digital purchases from webshops on any platform that allows it, including iOS in the European Union and United States.
As an extra bonus, players spending in Epic Webshops will also accrue 5% Epic Rewards on all their purchases.
Both initiatives are planned for next month. Presumably, Epic will take no cut from the first $1 million in revenue generated. If an app generates over $1 million in revenue through the system, Epic will take a 12% commission.
