Grand Theft Auto 6 will now be released in May 2026, developer Rockstar revealed on Friday.
The hugely anticipated launch was originally scheduled before the end of 2025, but now the gaming giant says more time is required to ensure the final product meets the expectations.
In a statement addressing the delay, Rockstar apologised and appealed for patients among gamers eagerly anticipating the first new GTA game in 12-13 years.
“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected,” Rockstar said. “The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.
“With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.
“We look forward to sharing more information with you soon.”
So far gamers don’t know a huge amount about the game, barring a 91-second trailer way back in December 2023. That revealed the Bonnie & Clyde-like plot and setting, but we didn’t get much in the way of gameplay.
Hopefully that’s part of the “more information” the developer plans to share soon. Whenever GTA 6 officially arrives, we’re pretty certain it’s going to fly to the upper echelons of our best PS5 games line-up.
Opinion
Naturally gamers, who’ve seemingly been planning their entire lives around the release of this game, are update. But what’s another six months after 12-13 years? I just completed a wait of 35 years to see Liverpool win the league title in front of fans. Suck it up, buttercups.
