New Surface Pro coming next week to challenge 11-inch iPad Pro?

Microsoft is teasing new Surface hardware is arriving next week under the Copilot+ PC banner.

Microsoft will reveal “something new” on May 6, which is next Tuesday although it isn’t offering a time and it doesn’t appear to be a live stream either.

So, what’s Microsoft likely to reveal, likely by press release or blog post on May 6? The company isn’t giving much away beyond “Something new is coming…find out next week” and mentioning both Surface and Copilot+ PCs in a tweet on Friday.

CoPilot+ PC is the name Microsoft uses for the heavily AI-infused laptops from that have enough oomph to handle all of the newest features, like the controversial Recall currently rolling out.

As for new hardware, the online scuttlebutt has suggested the company is plotting more compact versions of the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop lines with an 11-inch or 12-inch display. Currently the Surface Pro carries a 13-inch display.

This would suggest Microsoft fancies a pop at the iPad Pro.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 11, which arrived a year ago, was the first to carry the Copilot+ PC banner. It arrived with a wonderful 13-inch OLED display and was posted by Snapdragon X chips, marking the first in the series to ditch Intel chips

Our reviewer Max Parker gave it a 4.5 star score and concluded: “The Surface Pro 11, at least in its OLED display-toting X Elite version, is the most complete Surface I have reviewed. The switch to efficient and powerful Qualcomm chips has been a huge success for a hybrid machine like this.”

What will the Surface Pro 12 have in store? Can it top our list of best OLED laptops? We may get an indication as soon as next Tuesday.

Opinion

Microsoft’s Surface Pro 11 didn’t look much different but it was a massive step forward for the series, thanks to the Snapdragon chips, OLED screens and new Copilot AI technology. We’re interested to see where the company goes with this de facto second generation of the new era.
