Apple’s India imports to the U.S. doubled in April

iPhone shipments from India to U.S. increased year-on-year in April

The U.S. tariff situation effectively forced Apple to accelerate its India iPhone manufacturing effort, with the end result being a doubling of exports from the country since 2024.

Apple is known to be gradually spreading its iPhone production from a China-centric operation into India. However, the threat of tariff increases by the United States, and their implementation in April, has forced some sourcing changes.

According to vendor reports to the Indian government seen by Business Standard, Apple has massively increased its exports from India to the United States. In April 2025, the value of Apple exports reached over 17,219 crore ($2,029,796,382), an increase of 116% compared to April 2024.

The rise is consistent with other reports on Indian iPhone imports to the United States. The Times of India reported on May 1 that 97.6% of total iPhone exports from India in March went to the United States, up from 81.9% between December and February.

It also correlates with comments made by CEO Tim Cook ahead of the Q2 2025 financial results release. At the time, Cook said that over half of the iPhones sold in the United States came from India.

Continued increases

With Apple aiming to distribute its production to soften the blow of major global events that could impact the supply chain, Apple intends to increase its India-based output in the future.

In April, assembly partner Tata opened a new plant, days ahead of a similar Foxconn plant opening. However, with Apple allegedly planning for nearly every iPhone 18 sold in the U.S. to be made in India by the end of 2026, there could be more construction on the horizon.

After the administration of President Donald Trump significantly increased tariffs against China, it demonstrates that Apple was right to redistribute its supply chain. Even with the temporary reprieve ahead of a planned semiconductor tariff, Apple still has a justification to keep pressing forward with expansion in India.
