We’re less than a month from the Nintendo Switch 2 release and we’re still leaning more little details about the sequel console.
Here’s today’s tidbit: When Switch 2 gamers recharge the console, they will be able to enable a setting that keeps the battery charge at around 90%.
Indeed, as revealed in the Nintendo Today news app, if the setting is enabled Nintendo will slow charging as it approaches 90%.
“The Nintendo Switch 2 system stops charging when it reaches about 90% remaining battery,” the company writes. “Pausing the charge at around 90% reduces deterioration to the battery. If “Stop Charging Around 90%” is turned on, the charging speed will slow down around 90%.”
It’ll be ideal for gamers who keep the console docked for extended periods of time, meaning the battery isn’t sitting at full charge for that entire period. That kind of constant charging at full capacity is known to diminish the lifespan of lithium ion cells.
Battery health could be paramount given the Switch 2 could have a shorter battery life per charge than the original, potentially meaning more charges overall. The company estimates the Switch 2 will can last for as little as 2 hours, whereas the original console estimated at least 2.5 hours.
