iOS and iPadOS 18 were packed full of new features, but one of the most transformative additions for me helped eliminate my motion sickness in the car. Now, that same ‘Vehicle Motion Cues’ feature is coming to the Mac too.
Vehicle Motion Cues coming to macOS 16 this fall
Today Apple announced a host of new accessibility features launching this fall in iOS 19, macOS 16, and more. There are a ton of potentially game-changing new capabilities coming.
One that stands out most to me, though, is an expansion of a feature from last year: Vehicle Motion Cues.
Vehicle Motion Cues arrived in iOS and iPadOS 18 with the promise of helping passengers who suffer from motion sickness while using a device.
Here’s how Apple explains the feature:
Research shows that motion sickness is commonly caused by a sensory conflict between what a person sees and what they feel, which can prevent some users from comfortably using iPhone or iPad while riding in a moving vehicle. With Vehicle Motion Cues, animated dots on the edges of the screen represent changes in vehicle motion to help reduce sensory conflict without interfering with the main content. Using sensors built into iPhone and iPad, Vehicle Motion Cues recognizes when a user is in a moving vehicle and responds accordingly.
It sounds far too simple to work. And of course, it won’t work for everyone.
But for me, the feature was transformative.
And now, Apple has announced that macOS 16 will bring Vehicle Motion Cues to the Mac too.
Additionally, iPhone and iPad users will gain new tools for customizing the dots that appear onscreen—presumably to help users further reduce their motion sickness struggles.
These days, it’s not often that I’m a passenger in a car. But for most of last year I would use Vehicle Motion Cues all the time to get work done on the go. I turned it on for short car rides and long road trips. And it was a truly game-changing addition for me.
I’m glad to see Mac users benefit from the feature too—and hopefully before long, cellular Macs will arrive and make Vehicle Motion Cues even more of an asset.
