We’ve not seen a new Dyson vacuum cleaner since the Gen5detect launched back in 2023. While that cleaner was built to be the most powerful, it’s also quite large and heavy; today, we have a brand-new launch at the opposite end of the scale, the super-slim PencilVac.
38mm diameter
With a diameter of just 38mm, including the bin, the PencilVac is the slimmest vacuum cleaner, and it’s barely any bigger than the wand on most cordless vacuum cleaners. Weighing just 1.8kg, this is a cordless vacuum cleaner that’s been designed for convenience, making it easy to carry and use anywhere around the home.
Dyson’s new Hyperdymium 140k motor is the company’s smallest yet and also its fastest, providing plenty of power despite its compact dimensions.
It shares some design DNA with the company’s Omni-glide vacuum cleaner (from way back in 2021), which was designed with hard floors in mind, and was quite a bit thicker. However, the Omni-glide’s stand-out feature was its clever floor head, which had dual rollers and could quickly be moved in any direction.
Fluffycones floor head
The PencilVac builds on the Omni-glide, with a new Fluffycones cleaner head, which has four conical brush bars split over two brush bars (one at the front and one at the rear). Spinning in opposite directions, the brush bar design lets the floor head clean in both directions, with laser-like illumination on both sides highlighting dirt.
We’ve been impressed by the laser optic light on previous floor heads, working brilliantly to highlight dirt that’s invisible to the naked eye.
Thanks to the conical brush bars, the floor head is an anti-tangle model, and the brushes protrude at either end for full edge cleaning.
While the Fluffycones head is designed for hard floors, the PencilVac also comes with a conical hair screw tool (also anti-tangle) for carpets, sofas and other soft furnishings, and a rotating combi-crevice tool for cleaning everywhere else.
Dust compression
With such a small body, Dyson has had to rework the bin system to provide enough dust capacity. Air is used to compress collected dust to maximise bin capacity, and there’s a new syringe, no-touch ejection system for clean emptying.
Meanwhile, two-stage linear dust separation capture 99.99% of particles down to 0.3 microns, with only cleaner air being expelled out of the rear.
Battery life and charging
Battery life is up to 30 minutes, with the cleaner attaching to a magnetic charging dock to recharge. A hot swappable battery pack is a available to double the run-time.
Similar to other Dyson vacuum cleaners, there’s an LCD screen that shows the current power mode and the remaining runtime in minutes.
And, the PencilVac is the first from the company to be compatible with the MyDyson app, which gives additional settings, maintenance alerts and step-by-step guidance.
Price and availability
The Dyson PencilVac will be available in 2026. Pricing has not been announced yet.
