The next Nubia Red Magic phone could have an electrochromic shell

Nubia Red Magic phones are getting pretty well known these days, especially if you’re into the mobile gaming scene. They typically feature high-end hardware and some useful extra features, but Nubia wants to take that a step further and make the designs really stand out in the crowd.

    Nubia Red Magic electrochromic design

This new leak comes from AnTuTu’s Weibo account and seems to show an electrochromic back for the next Nubia Red Magic phone. So what is an electrochromic back, you might be wondering?

We’ve actually seen this in other phones before, most notably OnePlus’s 2019 concept phone that hides its rear cameras. Essentially, the material can change how opaque it is, shifting from a solid black to a more translucent appearance. This lets you see some of the components and design on the phone’s motherboard, which isn’t particularly useful but does look very cool.

Electrochromic designs like this tend to have higher power consumption, but a Nubia Red Magic phone with an active cooling system is the perfect candidate for keeping things cool and functional, so this leak does make a lot of sense. We still don’t have any official announcement on what phone could be using it, but whatever 2021 sequel to the Red Magic 5G seems like a good bet.
