NEW DELHI: Delhi Metro commuters can now pay in cash to recharge smart cards but tokens have yet not been allowed as a safety measure to prevent the spread of Covid-19. “In a limited way, cash transactions are being permitted in Delhi Metro but token sale is still not permitted. However, public is advised to use cashless methods for protection against Covid,” DMRC recently tweeted.
A DMRC official said tokens would not come back in use anytime soon but both cash and digital transactions had recently been allowed for buying or recharging smart cards. Commuters can recharge the cards online at https://www.dmrcsmartcard.com/ or pay through credit/debit cards at stations. Those travelling by the standalone Airport Express Line have the additional facility of paying the fare through QR code also.
DMRC restarted train services in September after being closed for 169 days. The reopening, however, came with a new SOP, which mandated that no cash transaction would take palce at stations. It also made smart cards must for travel.
