It’s been a tough year for both movies and moviegoers, as COVID-19 disrupted the typical cinematic release schedule. The vast majority of die-hard movie fans haven’t been inside a theatre for more than 12 months, so it’s a little difficult to get excited about awards. With that said, Apple TV+ got on the map with two nominations for the 2021 Academy Awards that will air on April 25.

When I heard that Apple TV+ earned a nomination for Tom Hank’s ‘Greyhound’ I was really happy. However, it was disappointing that the nomination was for “Sound” – yawn. I think tha tthe film deserved a nomination for Best Picture and Tom Hanks for Best Actor, but it wasn’t in the cards.

The little bit of bright news for Apple came with ‘Wolfwalkers‘ nomination for best ‘Animated Feature Film.’ It’s temporarily back in theaters this Friday in New York for the St. Patrick Day crowd. The animated film is up against some pretty stiff competition including Disney-Pixar with “Soul

The Nominatees for Best Picture include:

    “The Father” (Sony Pictures Classics)

“Judas and the Black Messiah” (Warner Bros.)

    “Mank” (Netflix)

    “Minari” (A24)

    “Nomadland” (Searchlight Pictures)

    “Promising Young Woman” (Focus Features)

    “Sound of Metal” (Amazon Studios)

“The Trial of the Chicago 7” (Netflix)
