Modern flagship smartphones pack in large displays and since Sony stopped developing its Compact line-up for western markets, there hasn’t been much in the way of options when it comes to smaller phones unless you are willing to take a hit on performance and features with the Pixel 4a. ASUS could be developing what the Android world has been crying out for, though, thanks to a leak that reveals the ZenFone 8 Mini, a 5.9-inch handset that could be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 processor.
Thanks to the XDA who peeked at the kernel source code of the ROG Phone 5, we know that there are up to three new flagship smartphones being developed by ASUS, with the following codenames:
- SAKE – Probably the ZenFone 8 Mini with a 5.92-inch OLED display, referred to as a “small phone” in the kernel source code. The configuration file for the display mentions a 120Hz refresh rate with FHD+ resolution, and the presence of two rear cameras – Sony’s 64MP IMX686 and the IMX663
- PICASSO – Could sport a 6.67-inch OLED panel with FHD+ resolution, with Sony’s 64MP IMX686 and 12.2MP IMX363 sensors, along with Omnivision’s 24MP OV24B1Q and 8MP OVO8A “Telephoto” sensors.
- VODKA – Just the codename is known at this time.
All three devices are said to be powered by the Snapdragon 888 processor which means we can expect flagship performance. It’s not known when the ZenFone 8 series will launch, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for further details.
