Apple’s Radical New iPhone Suddenly Takes Shape

Revelations about Apple’s new iPhone 13 range have been controversial (to say the least). But for those of you now tempted to wait another year, the exciting news is Apple is working on a far more radical iPhone.

In a new report, historically accurate site The Elec (via MacRumors) reports that from next year changes in Apple’s supply chain indicate that all iPhone 14 models will be moving to 120Hz ProMotion displays. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Explaining the switch, The Elec explains that Apple’s current supply structure sees it source premium displays from Samsung — including the 120Hz-capable LTPO panels for the upcoming iPhone 13 Pro models — with LG supplying budget panels for low-end iPhones. This will all change in 2022, with LG joining Samsung in supplying 120Hz-capable LTPO panels as well giving Apple the volume (and economy of scale) to bring ‘ProMotion’ displays to all iPhone 14 models.

In contrast, only this year’s iPhone 13 Pro models will get ProMotion to join the iPad Pro range (video below demonstrating it) with the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini missing out. The news also ties in perfectly with growing reports that Apple will replace the iPhone 13 Mini with a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max. High resolution displays increase battery drain and the Mini, with its much smaller battery, already struggles to deliver all-day battery life. This wouldn’t be a problem for its substantially larger replacement.

Moreover, this is just the start of the changes tipped for Apple’s 2022 iPhones. Acclaimed Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo has already revealed Apple will scrap the notch in favour of a punch hole, bring back Touch ID and pair them with the “cheapest 5G iPhone ever”.

So should you wait to upgrade your iPhone until 2022? It all depends on the features you value most. For example, recent leaks have revealed there will be no 1TB iPhone 13 Pro model, no ProMotion displays, ‘full fat’ 5G or LiDAR upgrades for iPhone 13 models, and the return of Touch ID was pushed to the iPhone 14. On the flipside, all iPhone 13 models will have a smaller notch, massive new cameras, increased battery life and ProMotion for Pro models. There’s an earlier than expected release as well.

Technology improves every year, which means waiting will always be rewarded so it’s about picking the moment when upgrading makes most sense to you. After all, in 2023 we might even get an iPhone that folds
