Wireless charging has come a long way in terms of the time it takes to charge a phone with the OnePlus 9 Pro being a prime example with its 50W wireless charging, but you still need to put the device on the actual charger. The holy grail for companies developing wireless charging technologies is the ability to charge a compatible phone that is perhaps placed a meter or two from the actual charger, and perhaps Motorola’s 2nd-Gen over-the-air charging solution is closer to the ideal than ever before.
Revealed on the Chinese social media network, Weibo, the second-generation over-the-air wireless charging station is bigger than its predecessor but them it does pack in 1,600 antennas. Whereas the 1st-gen could charge a device at a range up to 100cm, the new version can charge 4 devices at up to 3m away with a 100-degree cone of coverage.
It’s still a technology that is being developed and there’s no word on when or if we should expect to see it ready for the mainstream consumer, but Motorola’s 2nd-gen over-the-air wireless charger shows that development is continuing apace.
