On Wednesday, September 7, Apple will hold its latest special event and it’ll unveil new products. Sure, there’ll be new iPhones and likely a new version of AirPods Pro, but arguably the most exciting release will be the new Apple Watch models. And now, images claiming to show the most intriguing of the new releases have surfaced.
Apple is due to release a new Apple Watch SE, as an entry-level option. Then there’s the Apple Watch Series 8, with new sensors and capabilities. But most attention has been focused on what may be called the Apple Watch Pro.
This has been reported to be a Watch designed to be more rugged and resilient, ideal for those who are fans of extreme sports. It’s been said it would be larger than previous Watches, and offer a new design.
Now, in renders shared by 91mobiles, the Watch is extraordinarily different from any Watch yet seen.
First, the front looks like being entirely flat, not the curved glass of the Apple Watch Series 7. This may increase its strength and resistance to damage.
The report claims that the bezels will be very slim, so the larger Watch will be able to house a 49mm display. As a comparison, the largest Watch so far has a 45mm screen.
So, as other rumors have said, this sounds like it will be a large, chunky device that won’t be to everyone’s taste.
Even more interesting, the Digital Crown looks like it is bigger, with sharper edges. And, in a stark departure from current designs, the Crown will be surrounded by a protuberant housing, perhaps to protect the Crown during those sporty moments for which it is designed.
If correct, this housing just out significantly, in what I would say is a slightly un-Apple-like look. No doubt the protuberance is stuffed to the guts with technology, allowing extra components or longer battery life, perhaps. But it looks wildly different from any other Apple timepiece.
The renders also show room for the current Side Button in the extended housing and a separate button on the opposite side. This is something new, which nobody had predicted.
It makes sense, given the Watch’s presumed purpose. An extra button may add new metrics or make recording a run, climb, or ride easier to manage.
Of course, renders like these only give a clue, not the final image, assuming they are genuine, which isn’t certain. But they’re certainly a fascinating glimpse at what we might see later this week.
