This article discusses 5 reasons to watch the Apple TV+ series Gutsy and does not contain any spoilers.
On September 9, Apple TV Plus is releasing the new documentary series Gutsy, from Chelsea and Hillary Clinton (showrunner is Anna Chai). It is based on their New York Times bestselling book, The Book of Gutsy Women. If you are on the fence about watching it, or just haven’t heard of it, here are five reasons why you should check it out.
5 reasons to watch Gutsy on Apple TV Plus
Reason 1: Gutsy does not deal directly with politics
Even though it’s a Clinton series through and through, it is more about bringing light to women’s issues than it is about a political campaign. It’s true that, at a certain level, everything can get political, and the series does bring up Donald Trump and the 2016 election, but it doesn’t come off as a political move.
Reason 2: To learn about new points of view
By the very nature of its format, Gutsy explores a wide variety of topics and how women are traditionally treated differently than men in them. For instance, the first episode features several stand-up comics talking about their experiences as women on stage, how the public is usually less receptive to their jokes, and how they are pushing the boundaries of what can be made fun of. As a man myself, this is the type of stuff I don’t normally encounter, and I love learning about their perspectives, which are very different from my day-to-day.
Reason 3: It’s an honest portrayal of real issues
Also a consequence of the nature of the format, Gutsy uses the power of honest conversation and meaty questions to address important issues in the same conversations that more lighthearted situations are brought up. In that first episode, for instance, Wanda Sykes goes bowling with Chelsea and Hillary Clinton, and their conversations shift from joking about Hillary’s terrible bowling skills to Wanda revisiting one of her most horrifying moments doing stand-up comedy. It checks the boxes of a typical documentary, where they ask questions to experts in a particular field to drive home the point they want to make, but it’s usually done in a more natural environment. It’s not a floating head documentary, but rather, one where the interviewers sit down for a coffee (or go bowling) with the interviewees.
Reason 4: The star power
From Amy Schumer or Kate Hudson to Kim Kardashian or Megan Thee Stallion, Apple and the Clintons really went for it and brought some of the most famous women in the world to have a chat with. And each of them is an expert in their own field, and also has had to fight twice as hard as the men they compete against. If you are interested in getting to know these women better, the real them, this is probably one of the best opportunities out there.
Reason 5: It’s really well edited, and rather engaging
With eight episodes of 40 minutes a piece, Gutsy is just a really digestible watch. Each of the episodes is really entertaining, due to its clever editing and its really good pace. They are easy to watch before bed, or on your lunch break, and they will also help you appreciate the women around you, and their experiences, more, so that your day can be improved even if it’s just a little bit.
