MEMPHIS, Tenn. — There is an update to a story FOX13 Investigates has been following for months, telling you about issues with the Apple AirTag, a small device, bought for about $30, that allows a user to track someone in real time.
It’s caused concern from people all over the Mid-South.
The updates from Apple come after our reporting, for months, FOX13 Investigates has been digging into AirTags and the issues they’ve been causing and the fear and terror for people that have found the device following them.
The updates come in the form of firmware updates from Apple, now allowing iPhone users to find what may be an unknown AirTag with “precision finding,” that way you can find out if the AirTag is moving with you.
Another update allows a sound alert to help that let a person know when an AirTag is separated from the person who’s activated it and when it is traveling with you.
In a report FOX13 Investigates brought you earlier this month, FOX13 Investigates told you we’d uncovered Memphis police reports of women finding AirTags following them. FOX13 Investigates even used it to track one of our reporters, making clear just how easy this is to misuse.
That came after FOX13 Investigates spoke, face to face, with a woman who found an AirTag following her around, sharing her story with us so it doesn’t happen to you.
FOX13 Investigates asked Apple for a response to our reporting and, while they condemned malicious use of AirTags, saying that anyone who activates an AirTag gets a warning that says its solely for tracking your own items, and that it’s a crime to track anyone using it.
The updates to the AirTag happen automatically when the AirTag is in range of an iPhone.
