Top Bike Tech Stories of 2022

What is it that investment accounts always warn you… ‘past performance is no guide to future gains’ or something? If we were to base our future reviews and tech stories on what you’d read most in the past year, then what follows is what you’d be getting more of. So, ebikes and hardtails, yes?

In ascending order, here are the top ten most read bike tech stories of 2022, as voted for by the clicky little fingers of internet users far and wide.

10. Hardcore Hardtails

In at number 10, it’s a good old list of hardtails, pitched at those looking for something for winter. In other countries, riders swap bikes for skis as the wintery way of ruining their knees. Here in the UK, we just ditch the rear suspension.

9. Orbea Rise Review

It’s a very popular bike indeed, and Mark’s review of it enters the top tech stories of 2022, in at number nine.

8. Suspension from the future

Argh…brain melt! A review of 2023 suspension makes it into the top ten of a 2022 tech story line up? Ross’ review of new kit from RockShox has got you clicking.

7. A tyre for Everything

Is it the promise of not having to change tyres? Or the financially appealing prospect of only needing to own two tyres? Whatever, you wanted to know what Benji has to say about this do-it-all rubber.

6. Lightweight eMTBs

This is a bit of a golden oldie, and it’s probably due a refresh given how the market has moved on. But the fact that it remains a popular piece of content perhaps suggest that this is what a lot of people in the market are looking for. Are the days of the full fat eMTB coming to an end?

5. A perfect bike?

It’s perhaps no surprise that this should be such a popular review. Hope holds a special place in a many a mountain biker’s heart, so Benji’s views on it were bound to be of interest. Plus, it has a good ol’ ‘draw them in’ clicky headline.

4. Rigid bikes, low faff

Another list from the past – perhaps it’s been given some renewed interest as mountain bikers tired of component shortages? Drop bar groupsets and suspension forks were two of the hardest to come by components in The Great Shortage, so perhaps that explains it? Or maybe you just fancied something simple for commuting with a bit of a play along the way? Or perhaps you’re tired of your knees and your wrists – in some parts of the world, people go skiing and snowboarding to wear out these body parts.

3. Hardtail bike test

Whoop, more hardtails! They’re practical, they’re more affordable, they can be ridden down most of the places you’d ever want to ride… who doesn’t love a hardtail review, or three? Is there anywhere in the world that loves hardtails more than the Brits?

2. Wide range cassettes…again!

This is the story that will not die. It lives on, for ever and ever. Presumably, that’s in contrast to your cassettes, and you’re shopping for a new one, again. Whether you’re looking for a bargain, or just an alternative to one of the two Big Ss, you and the rest of the internet just keep clicking on this story.

1. Trek Fuel EXe Hyperbole!

In at the top spot, the most read tech story of this year is Benji’s deliberately (but truthfully) provocative article on the Trek Fuel EXe. He did actually get hold of one eventually, and reviewed it here, but for now it’s his musings that’s got all the clicks.

Does that Top 10 reflect what you’d have imagined would be most popular? Remember, this is based on numbers which include ‘passing’ users as well as the people who are hanging out here and reading stories day in day out. That does slightly skew things towards the Very Exciting Headline and some savvy web search discoverability type stuff. We’d love it if you’d give us your more personal take on what you think would be useful or relevant to you. It’s great to have a story go viral, but it’s even better to have a reader be loyal. Take our survey and help us know a bit more about what might keep you coming back here, again and again.
