Apple’s ‘Slow Horses’ Season 2 Is One Of The Best-Reviewed Shows Of The Year

I forget that I have Apple TV Plus sometimes, because my Google-OS TV will literally not allow me to install the app, so I have to watch it through my PlayStation 5 instead. But if there’s one thing I’ve always said about Apple’s TV offerings, it’s that pound for pound, it’s one of the best streaming libraries out there. And that’s certainly the case when it comes to Slow Horses, its prestige spy thriller which just wrapped up its second season.

Slow Horses stars Gary Oldman who manages Slough House, full of “slow horses,” exiled spies who have been punished with a crap assignment. While season 1 was solid, season 2 is exceptional, and in fact, it’s one of the best reviewed major releases across any streaming service this year.

Slow Horses season 2 currently has a 100% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, over two dozen of them all in agreement, and a 96% from fans. That’s up from the already-good 95%/90% of season 1.

That also makes it one of the best reviewed seasons of a show I can find on the site for 202. Sure, there are huge megahits which had way more viewership, but critic and audience scores this high are rare. Other high-scorers this year include:

  • The Bear – 100% (74 critics), 91% audience score
  • Better Call Saul season 6 – 99% (179 critics), 93% audience score
  • What We Do in the Shadows season 4 – 100% (29 critics), 86% audience score
  • Reservation Dogs season 2 – 100% (31 critics), 89% audience score
  • Barry season 3 – 99% (93 critics), 87% audience score

As you can see, Slow Horses is beating all of them. The only show it loses to? Warrior Nun season 2 on Netflix, which has 100% from 10 critics, and a 99% audience score from over 8,000 fans, who tried to use that audience score to convince Netflix to renew the series for season 3. Netflix cancelled it anyway.

The point being, Slow Horses season 2 is very good. Apple realizes what they have in this spy drama, and in season 1, they already greenlit seasons 2 and 3, and season 2 ends with a preview of season 3, which is already shot. Production just flies along on this thing, and we should be seeing its third season in short order, it seems like. We’ll see if it can knock another storyline out of the park the way it did this year.
