AMD Ryzen 7 7745HX 8 Core “Dragon Range” Laptop CPU Knocks Out Intel’s 14 & 16 Core Raptor Lake-HX Chips In Performance Efficiency
The AMD Ryzen 7 7745HX is one of the four Dragon Range Laptop CPUs that will be available on a range of high-end laptops soon. The CPU packs 8 cores, 16 threads, 40 MB of cache, and has a clock speed rated at 3.6 GHz base & 5.1 GHz boost. The CPU comes in a base TDP spec of 45W which can be configured beyond 75 Watts since overclocking is supported on this high-end and enthusiast-grade laptop chip.
The Lenovo laptop in which the chip was featured comes with an 85W base TDP for the Ryzen 7 7745HX with an upper limit of 125/145W. The CPU has a TaU of 300s. It also packs an NVIDIA RTX 4060 Laptop GPU rated at 140W and a pair of DDR5-5200 (8 GB x 2) memory.
The tech outlet tested the AMD Ryzen 7 7745HX CPU through various benchmarks. In application performance, the CPU was run through Cinebench, SuperPi, y-cruncher, 3DMark CPU Profile, and various other content creation / rendering benchmarks. The overall results put the 8-core Dragon Range Laptop CPU on par with Intel’s Core i7-13700Hx and Core i7-13650HX, both of which have a higher core count of 16 and 14, respectively. The gaming numbers are even more surprising with the AMD Ryzen 7 7745HX “Dragon Range” 8-Core CPU leading both the Core i7-13700HX and the Core i7-13650HX. Several modern titles were tested and the AMD chip managed to secure the lead in the majority of the titles.

The reason behind this lead is shown in the power consumption chart. The Intel Raptor Lake-HX CPUs were sipping much higher power than the Dragon Range-HX part and hence left little head room for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 GPU. The AMD Dragon Range CPU consumed around 50 Watts during gaming compared to Intel’s 80W. Also, the AMD efficiency can be seen under the 80 Watt limit within Cinebench where it simply destroys the Intel Raptor Lake-HX parts. Sure the Intel CPUs lead when provided more power but you are still getting a mere 20% performance uplift and consuming over 60% more power.

Lastly, the review shows the overclocking performance of AMD’s Ryzen 7 7745HX “Dragon Range” CPU which offers PBO support and can deliver around 3-5% better performance for a slight power penalty.

Once again, as demonstrated in the Ryzen 9 7945HX CPU review, the little Dragon Range chip also delivers exceptionally great performance per watt which is more crucial for the laptop CPU segment than overall performance.
