BERLIN: It’s been a long time coming after eight years in development but “Dead Island 2” is finally available on consoles and PCs. The zombie hunt starts all over again and it’s bloodier than ever.
The story’s familiar from the game’s predecessors: An epidemic has broken out, slowly but surely turning all the inhabitants of Los Angeles into zombies. The six protagonists of the game also come into contact with the virus and urgently need an antidote.
The group, called “Slayers,” must escape the city, but that’s anything but easy in the midst of millions of mutated neighbours.
In terms of gameplay, “Dead Island 2” relies primarily on big impact rather than precision: the more zombies you kill with firearms, traps or your fists, the better. There’s no complicated combat system, but action-packed fun is nevertheless guaranteed.
The game doesn’t hold back from humour at the expense of others. Hollywood actors or social media influencers, who are both plentiful in Los Angeles, are often targeted.
The city, which is mostly shown in sunny weather, looks dazzlingly good. Thanks to a three-player co-op mode, the game is also suitable for groups.
“Dead Island 2” is never really challenging or varied but it doesn’t really have to be. Despite the lack of depth, the zombie campaign delivers a well-rounded genre package.
The game is available for PCs, the PlayStation 4 and 5, the Xbox One, and the Series X and S for around €60/US$60 (RM189 in Malaysia). – dpa
