Review: Beats Studio Buds+ look and sound great – if you can get them to fit

If you’re looking for a stylish pair of noise-cancelling earphones with great quality, Apple‘s new Beats Studio Buds+ might just be the ones.

These new earphones are a premium addition to the existing Beats Studio Buds line. At £179 they’re only £20 more than the standard Studio Buds but pack better battery life and more powerful noise cancellation.

They also look great and are available in a retro clear plastic style as well as white and black.

While they offer great sound quality, a good microphone, and won’t fall out of your ears when you’re exercising, I have had a few issues with the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and getting the earbuds to fit properly.

The charging case for the Studio Buds+ is quite big – it might be bulky in your pocket but at least you won’t lose it

The Studio Buds+ are ready to go out of the box and the charging case they come in is large enough that you won’t lose it. They also use the standard USB-C charger so you can power the battery without having to buy any new plugs.

They pair really quickly on Android devices, which is a great plus as earlier Beats products were designed more for iPhone. This means no waiting around to pair and you can even use the ‘Find My Device’ tools on your Google account to track down the earbuds if you lose them.

Battery life is also fantastic. Apple promises up to 36 hours of battery life and this definitely isn’t far off. I’ve been able to use the earphones over the course of a weekend without any charging.

The best part about them is that they hold up well against sweat when you’re exercising and I was able to get through several workouts without them falling out.

The earbuds immediately offer great sound quality and I didn’t have to perform any adjustments to the EQ, while the Beats app gives you tons of control over noise cancelling settings.

Inside the box there’s several different size options – but I struggled to get a good fit

But this is where I ran into some problems with the Studio Buds+. The box includes four different sizes of earbuds, (XS, S, M, and L) with the medium size fitted as standard.

The issue for me is that the ‘large’ earbuds are too big and cause some pain and discomfort after a long period of use. However, the smaller sizes are too small, meaning the noise cancellation doesn’t work as well as it should and ambient sound filters through easily.

This isn’t going to be an issue for everyone but it seems unusual that Beats has shipped two small-sized silicone earbuds but no middle ground between Medium and Large sizes.

All in all, the Studio Buds+ are a great option for anyone looking to buy some higher-end earbuds with good sound quality and a long battery life. They’re set for a June 13 release so keep an eye out on the Apple store to order yourself a pair.

Verdict: 4/5
