As with many other goods these days, prices for the rugs have gone up slightly over the last several months. For example, that 6-by-9-foot rug I bought would now cost about $319 instead of $299. You might be tempted to save some money and buy a Ruggable topper without a pad, but just using the topper could be a dangerous trip or slip hazard without something to keep it in place—it will definitely slide. We do recommend other, more affordable washable rugs, including rag rugs and flatwoven rugs, but they’re made of cotton, are heavier when wet, and shrink more easily. Ruggables are polyester, with a polyurethane coating to help them repel water, and we’ve only seen minor shrinking in ours (just make sure you don’t wash them in hot water or dry them on high heat). Also, our other washable picks don’t come with rug pads—you still have to buy those separately (heavier cotton rugs can be more forgiving to use without pads, but we always advise using one). If you do decide on a Ruggable, we’ve seen them discounted for Black Friday and at various times throughout the year, and coupon codes are not hard to come by. Sometimes customer service reps even give them out after a live chat. “It’s always been my position that you should probably be getting 15% off Ruggable rugs at any given point,” says Wirecutter Deals senior editor Nathan Burrow. “They hand out that 15% like candy.” Senior analyst Amie Wong and senior editor Kalee Thompson also recommend checking Facebook Marketplace for secondhand Ruggables if you’re on a tight budget.
