The Future by Naomi Alderman review — in the bunker with the tech bros


The Future begins with the end of the world. Lenk, a tech billionaire in the middle of a meditation session that was strongly recommended to him after one of his angry outbursts injured an employee, receives an alert on his phone. The world is ending. It’s time to retreat to his apocalypse-proof bunker.

He’s not alone – his competitors in business got the same alert. While the tech billionaires had been recklessly changing the world, they had also been building an exit strategy. They have underground bunkers, in places predicted to be stable whether the cataclysm is environmental, political or nuclear, stocked with food and gold, with state-of-the-art ventilation and security systems. They even have pools.
