The Samsung Galaxy S24 series launched this week and the details of the heavily teased Galaxy AI were finally revealed to the world. There are a lot of sensible AI features on the devices, of which translation was a big focus.
As they are tested more in the days leading to the smartphones shipping out to consumers, more specifics will come out. For instance, it was just found out that the translation feature works in WhatsApp and not just in Samsung Messages.
Samsung’s AI Translate Features Work In WhatsApp Too
If you thought that Samsung was only focusing on getting its AI features to work exclusively with its first-party applications, it seems that’s very far from the case. Tipster Alvin on X was able to demonstrate that text translations work very cleanly right in WhatsApp.
This makes it pretty clear that there’s still a lot that we don’t know about the true extent of what Galaxy AI will be able to do on the S24 smartphones. For instance, will translation work as smoothly with other third-party messaging platforms, or did WhatsApp have to do some work on their side to make it compatible?
This feature isn’t entirely novel, as the Google Pixel 8 launched with a similar feature called Live Translate. It’s yet to be seen whether the implementation is identical to the Samsung Galaxy S24 series.
Language Translation With AI Is A Huge Focus On The S24 Series
Galaxy AI was very clearly the star of the show at Samsung Unpacked, and translation features were a major segment of what Samsung had to demonstrate. Multiple features coming with the new devices have translation involved in one way or another.
The most notable is Live Translate. In this case, it’s different from the feature with the same name on the Pixel devices. This feature translates phone calls in real-time, both as voice and text, and it does it all within the Samsung Phone app, which is pretty impressive.
In addition, there’s Interpreter, which splits the screen and provides text translations for in-person conversations. If you’re a frequent traveler, this gives you an easy way to communicate with people who don’t speak your language, especially because it doesn’t need an internet connection. The new Samsung Keyboard has AI that can translate messages and emails, and Transcript can translate voice recordings too.
Important Things To Know About Samsung’s AI Features For The S24
While there’s still a lot that we’re likely yet to discover when it comes to Galaxy AI, there are some interesting things we know already, and they’re important to keep in mind if you have an interest in buying any phone in the S24 lineup.
First off, while Galaxy AI comes with all sorts of cool features, it is now known that some or all of them will require you to fork up some cash by 2025. That’s right: Samsung isn’t making it too clear at this point, but it looks like at least some of those juicy AI features are going to become paid options after next year.
You will also get the chance to enjoy some (or maybe all) of these Galaxy AI tricks on some of Samsung’s older devices. They’ve confirmed that the Tab S9, the S23 lineup (including the FE), and the fifth-generation foldables will be getting some AI love towards the end of Q2.
