Nubia’s Clamshell Foldable Will Be Coming To European Markets On April 9th
Nubia showed the world its first foldable phone at MWC 2024 in February last year, and that was pretty exciting. They didn’t let us know what to expect in terms of its eventual launch, but two months later, the company confirmed that the phone would be launching in Europe on April 9th. This doesn’t rule out any other regions but confirms one.
The company is encouraging you to sign up for their email list. Not only will you get exclusive updates sent directly to your inbox, but you’ll also get €15 (~$16) off any purchase you choose to make from the official Nubia store. The real perk is that you get into a raffle to win a Nubia Flip 5G for free. The chances of winning are slim, but if you were planning to get one anyway, it certainly doesn’t hurt.
The Nubia Flip Is The Company’s First Foldable Attempt, And It Doesn’t Look Too Bad
Nubia brought the Flip 5G to MWC 2024, and they told us a lot about what to expect from the phone, both inside and outside. The first thing is the design, which is rather attractive, in my opinion. It’s a typical clamshell foldable with a flat frame and curved corners. The inside has little to see beyond the 6.9-inch (pretty big) 120Hz foldable display and the 16MP selfie camera.
The cover, which looks set to come in black and beige colorways, is exciting and prioritizes stylish design over maximizing the cover display. There’s a small flash in the upper left corner of the cover and a large circular plate towards the center. The inner part of the plate contains the circular cover display, while the black ring around it holds two cameras: a 50MP primary lens and a 2MP depth sensor.
The company says the phone will run on Android 13, which is a shame, though we can assume it’ll get an update to Android 14 relatively quickly. It also has a 4,310 mAh battery with 33W of wired charging (which isn’t that fast but is much better than what the Z Flip 5 has to offer). It’s also going to come running on the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset, which is a little dated at this point — that’s the biggest sign not to expect flagship performance from this, though it might mean a more affordable price point.
