Log in to WhatsApp on the web
WhatsApp for Android doesn’t currently support custom stickers; you can still use these stickers in your chats, but we’ll need to create them on the web first. If you’ve never used WhatsApp’s website before, simply head over to web.whatsapp.com and link your account. You’ll need your mobile device for this, but it’s a pretty simple process that WhatsApp walks you through.
Once you’re logged in you should see all of your previous chats and should be able to create a new one. Either way, we’ll need to go into any of your chats to create the sticker.
Upload your sticker
On the left side of your message box, you should see the option to add an attachment to your WhatsApp chat. This is where we’ll be adding the custom sticker.
The last option in that overflow menu is “New Sticker” which is exactly what we want. Clicking this opens an upload box that will allow you to select your brand-new sticker. Once you’ve uploaded the image, you’ll see another window where you can tweak this sticker, including rotating and cropping it, adding text and captions, or drawing over it.
Once you’ve finalized all the changes you want to make, the sticker will be sent. To keep it on your mobile device, click the overflow menu on the message in your chat and choose to add the sticker to your favorites. That will keep it synced up and usable across your other devices.
Stick to the guidelines if you’re sharing stickers
WhatsApp does allow for creating custom sticker packs and even offers a few samples for you to get started in case you want to share creations with other WhatsApp users. These can be uploaded to Google Play or Apple’s App Store, but remember to follow WhatsApp’s guidelines when doing so:
- Each sticker has a transparent background.
- Stickers must be exactly 512×512 pixels.
- Each sticker must be less than 100 KB.
But if you think you have enough stickers that are worth packaging up and uploading to Google Play, the process is pretty simple so long as you have a developer account already in place. You’ll also need to follow any Play Store rules and guidelines, which generally means nothing offensive or insensitive is included. But that does make it very easy to share entire packs of stickers with your gaming buddies or family.
Hopefully, the process of making stickers will come directly to the Android app eventually, but for now, we’ll stick to the web interface to get it done. Fortunately, it’s a pretty simple process, especially following our guide.
