T-Mobile’s Shiny New Acquisition, US Cellular, Cost Them $4.4 Billion To Get
Acquisitions and mergers are a major part of business, so when they happen in the mobile carrier space, it’s business as usual for the most part. The only thing is, in the mobile carrier space, the rate at which smaller carriers have been snapped up is pretty shocking (and worrying). But we’re not here to talk about that, are we?
We recently reported on news that T-Mobile and Verizon looked set to split US Cellular between themselves and that news has panned out a lot faster than we expected. T-Mobile has acquired US Cellular for a substantial $4.4bn. This deal will give T-Mobile all of US Cellular’s customers and physical stores, as well as 30% of its spectrum assets. Whether the remaining 70% will be taken up by Verizon is yet to be seen. The deal is expected to close by mid-2025.
T-Mobile has made all the promises that should be expected from new ownership, such as being able to bring lower prices, more reliable performance, and better performance to US Cellular’s former customers. It says it will help bring better coverage to rural areas. Hopefully, these promises turn out to be true, because when companies don’t consider certain things to be fiscally beneficial, they might not do them at all.
As A US Cellular Customer, Are You Going To Need To Do Anything?
If you’re already on US Cellular, it might feel like you’ve been caught in between one giant and another massively larger giant fighting. You might not know what you’re supposed to do when your carrier gets acquired by another carrier.
In this case, US Cellular users can choose to do nothing and just stay on the plan that they were already on. For many people, that will be the most convenient option. However, they will also have the option of choosing to switch to an unlimited T-Mobile plan that they choose, without any switching costs associated.
I Hope This Buying Spree Doesn’t Hurt The Customers In The End
Less competition is good for businesses, but it is bad for the consumers. With each mobile carrier that is eaten up by one member of the Big Three, there’s less competition in the market. This makes it easier for these bigger players to price their services higher and higher without anyone there to influence them to knock those numbers down.
This certainly won’t be the end of all these acquisitions, but my hope is that things can stay competitive, even in 2037 when the Big Three would have consumed everyone else.
