Vivaldi’s Email Client Is Now Better Than Ever

Vivaldi is best known as a feature-packed web browser, but in the spirit of old internet app suites like Netscape, it also has an integrated email client. Now, the email client is getting an overhaul.

The latest Vivaldi 6.8 update includes Vivaldi Mail 2.0, delivering some much-needed features—just in time for everyone looking for Outlook alternatives. The update includes email prefetching, which downloads your recent messages to your device. Prefetching has been a key feature of other desktop email clients like Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail, and Mozilla Thunderbird for years, but it wasn’t in Vivaldi Mail until now. Vivaldi will save the last 30 days of messages by default, but you can change that.

Vivaldi’s email search used to only work for titles, recipients, and senders, but with prefetching, now you can search for phrases inside the emails too. Prefetching also provides 1-3 lines of preview text in your folders for each email, and it allows you to look through messages while offline.

The Vivaldi Mail update also includes a new quick reply field. When you’re reading an email, a text box is visible at the bottom-right corner of the window for typing a reply, without opening the full compose interface. Vivaldi said in a blog post, “Combined with our updated prefetching, using the contact view or thread view in your inbox will allow you to quickly get the context of a mail or conversation and send quick replies in the thread.”

Vivaldi 6.8 includes a few new features outside of the email client, too. You can now see real-time memory usage for a tab by hovering over it, similar to Google Chrome. The full Task Manager is still available with more detailed information. If you’re typing a URL in the address bar that is already open in a new tab, Vivaldi will show a button to switch to that tab, which should help you avoid creating duplicate tabs. The Break Mode has also been improved with a new animation, and you can now import extensions from other Chromium-based browsers into Vivaldi.

You can download Vivaldi for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone, and iPad. The new Vivaldi 6.8 update should be fully rolled out for desktop platforms.
