Tribit Stormbox 2 Review: A Worthy Successor

In the market for a new Bluetooth speaker? We’ve reviewed several speakers form Tribit and have generally had a good experience, so today we’re checking out their latest mid-size wireless speaker: the Stormbox 2.

The Stormbox 2 checks a lot of boxes that you’re probably looking for in a speaker, including loud surround sound, great battery life, the latest Bluetooth connection options, and a move to USB-C charging. So is it worth the cash? Let’s find out.

Simple Design

If you’ve seen the original Tribit Stormbox, you’re already familiar with the Stormbox 2’s design. Tribit liked what they had, and they didn’t change up much, keeping the big front buttons, attached lanyard, and sturdy material. The only real noticeable difference that you can see at a glance is the shift to USB-C on the back of the speaker, and ditching the Tribit branding on the side radiators.

It’s a very functional design that we’ve seen across tons of Bluetooth speakers over the past few years. The cylindrical design makes extra bass easier to achieve with passive radiators on both ends, and it’s very easy to hold and stash in a bag. Tribit does like to build the lanyard right into their speaker, which is somewhat unique compared to offerings from JBL and Sony.

The material is also grippy enough while offering a sturdy enclosure and some water resistance. It’ll also come in any color you want, so long as you want black.

Loud Sound, Good Bass

But the most important part of a speaker is how good it sounds, right? Tribit has almost always managed to strike a balance between great sound and affordable pricing, and the Stormbox 2 is no exception.

The speaker itself delivers a loud, clear sound with minimal distortion up until it’s close to its volume limit. Tribit says the speaker outputs 34W at peak power, which is impressive for something this size.

The 360 degree speaker placement also means that you’re getting a clear sound no matter how it’s positioned or where it’s laying. The mids are well defined, with a crisp if slightly bright high end and powerful low-end. You can turn on the X-Bass button on the back of the speaker if you’re trying to get a little more oomph out of the speaker, which cranks the low end up to as much as the Stormbox 2 can handle. I personally prefer the tighter bass without the setting on, but if you’re trying to fill up a room for a party, it’s a nice option to have.

Extra Features

Tribit has crammed in plenty of extra features here, including the latest Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity for high sound quality and minimal latency, plus the ability to connect two Stormbox 2 speakers together to create a true stereo sound. That Bluetooth connection also works up to 150 feet away, too, really stretching the limits of what you expect out of a Bluetooth speaker.

The speaker itself is IPX7 rated, so you can toss it in a pool (although you probably shouldn’t) and Tribit claims the speaker will last for 24 hours on a single charge. My neighbors won’t let me test this for 24 straight hours, but I’ve barely had to charge the speaker at all so I don’t doubt the claims here.

Tribit has also built a new app for their speaker, allowing you to customize the EQ or use of their presets to get the perfect sound of your speaker. All in all, some great upgrades.

Worth It?

At less than $70, Tribit has once again created a speaker that’s going to deliver a great experience at a very affordable price. Sure, you can probably find some speakers that have a few more features or get a little louder, but it’s hard to find anything with meaningful upgrades without spending considerably more money. In the sub-$100 category, Tribit makes a case for some of the best speakers on the market, and they’re continuing to try and deliver that value here.
