Infinix Wants To Upgrade Payments With Its SphereTech NFC

Infinix is a huge brand where I’m from, but I understand that many people might not be as familiar with it, especially in North America. The company makes smartphones that target a younger audience in terms of design and functionality, but it seems they also want to innovate in a more unusual way.

It seems the Chinese manufacturer was not pleased with how you can only use NFC from the back of your phone and has been busy working on a change that nobody asked for, but that we might actually appreciate. They call it SphereTech, and it could make smartphone NFC usage more convenient.

Infinix makes smartphones in the lower tier of the price ladder, which caters quite nicely to a lot of developing countries as its phones bring a lot of value for the price that they come at. It is never usually on the cutting edge of smartphone innovation, but its recently announced SphereTech NFC technology might actually be a chance for the company to change that.

If you’ve used NFC before, whether to open smart locks or to make payments, then you know that you need to tap the back of your phone against the reader and you have to be relatively precise in order to align things. Otherwise, you might need to go in for a second tap, or a third. Apparently, SphereTech is meant to make this a lot easier for you, whether you’re getting into public transit, entering your home, or making a payment.

The idea is that you won’t need to align things perfectly with SphereTech NFC. It’ll make it possible for your phone to be read from not only the back, but the top edge and the front of the phone as well. This is one of those things that might be a little gimmicky, but you can’t deny that it’ll certainly make things more convenient, even if it just shaves about a second off how long it normally would have taken you.

It’s also going to increase the card reading area by 200% and double the signal range according to Infinix, which should make using NFC a lot easier to do in fast-paced environments or when you’re in a rush. This tech is proprietary and patented so we might not see it become standard in anything more than Infinix (and potentially Tecno) phones if other brands aren’t willing to pay the necessary fees.

In 2024, NFC Should Be A Must-Have Feature, No Matter How Budget The Phone

Not everyone uses NFC in their daily routine, but for consumers in many parts of the world, it is an extremely convenient feature that particularly makes payments super easy. Unfortunately, it seems that not all manufacturers acknowledge how basic and necessary a feature this is.

The CMF Phone 1 launched recently and it is a tremendous device. However, it quite notably doesn’t have NFC which I’m certain will make some people pass on it. There are cheaper phones with NFC and it is really one of those corners no company should try and cut. At least not in these modern times.
