The OnePlus Open was a pretty awesome foldable, especially for the company’s first attempt at it. It came out in October last year, which of course means that its successor’s eventual launch is getting closer and closer.
There’s not so much that’s known about what the Chinese manufacturer intends to bring to the table with this smartphone, but a recent rumor from Weibo tells us a bit about the specs. Most exciting is news on the battery and how it might be pushing past a mark that no foldable device has ever gone beyond.
The OnePlus Open 2 Might Be The Only Foldable With a 6,000 mAh Battery In It
The foldable market is at its liveliest yet, and the best part isn’t that we just have a lot of participants in it at the moment, but the fact that many of these participants are pushing out devices that are truly worthy of the “flagship” title, especially considering how expensive foldables can be. The OnePlus Open was one of the better foldables that came out last year, and it was great for a first attempt from the company.
As the original OnePlus Open is nearing its one-year anniversary, we can start to anticipate the launch of its successor. The OnePlus Open 2 is going to be the company’s next foldable attempt, and thanks to Digital Chat Station on Weibo, we know a few broader strokes regarding what we should expect from the device.
No surprise, but it will be running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, which means you can expect as much performance as the device can possibly give out. It is also expected to be lighter and thinner than its predecessor, which of course, is the aim of all foldable manufacturers at this point — everyone strives to beat what Honor is doing.
However, the battery that is rumored to come with the smartphone is the real star of the show. Supposedly, it will be coming with a 6,000 mAh battery, which is not only big for a regular smartphone, but would make it the biggest battery in any foldable phone (and at least 1,200 mAh bigger than its predecessor). The current record holder is the Vivo X Fold 3, with a 5,700 mAh cell. To take it past the 6,000 mark would be massive though, and we likely have the company’s Glacier Battery tech to thank for that.
Sadly, Don’t Expect The Device To Launch This Year
Unfortunately, if you were itching to get your hands on this device as a Christmas present to yourself, that probably won’t be happening. The same source says that we should expect the device to launch in the first quarter of next year, which could be as late as March 2025.
That’d be quite a gap, as the current device launched in October 2023, so at the very least, it might end up coming out a full 3 months after the original device. It’s possible that OnePlus might want to synchronize its flagship launches and bring it out alongside the OnePlus 13 series. It might also be that it wants to wait long enough to have access to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.
