Scammer posing as Amarillo Police Sergeant demanding Bitcoin payment

A scammer is posing as an Amarillo Police Department Sergeant and demanding a Bitcoin payment to avoid arrest.

APD says a man has been posing as Sergeant Kevin Anderson and is calling citizens and telling them to pay warrants with Bitcoin to avoid arrest.

Police remind the public that law enforcement will never ask for payment in Bitcoin.

Other tips to avoid being scammed include:

  • If someone calls claiming to be a police officer, demand their badge number and ID.
  • Hang up and verify the person’s identity by contacting the local police department directly. Do not use phone numbers provided by the caller.
  • If you’re unsure whether you have warrants, call local law enforcement to check. Authorities will not call to ask for payment over the phone.
  • If you suspect a scam, hang up and talk to someone you trust.
