Extra Cool – Jaecoo J7 EX+ AWD review | Tarmac Life | Motoring | Tech

It was only a few weeks ago that we were slipping and sliding on the sodden grassy farmyard hills around Clevedon in the new Jaecoo J7 EX+ AWD. Well, with it more than proving its mettle on the slopes, we wondered how it would fare on Auckland’s urban tarmac. Jaecoo were happy to oblige.

As a brand, Jaecoo is very new to New Zealand. In fact, it was only a couple of weeks before the above launch that we tested out the J7 EX (2WD) model. However, along with Omoda, Jaecoo comes under the ‘Chery’ corporation which is a global automotive giant from China, so fear not about its credentials. And while Omoda is leaning towards the more fashion conscious amongst us, Jaecoo is for those that crave cool adventures.

As with the EX 2WD, the design and aesthetics of the medium-sized SUV J7, are striking and noteworthy. At the front, it showcases an impressive AMG-inspired multi-slat grille, boldly displaying the JAECOO name in the centre. The stacked headlights are topped with daytime running lights (DRLs) that resemble a chequered flag, and the nose is complemented by multiple vents that enhance cooling and aerodynamics.

With a length of around 4.5 metres and a ground clearance of 200 mm, the J7 adeptly balances urban manoeuvrability with (aforementioned) off-road capability. Its carefully crafted exterior is highlighted by protective wheel arch guards and lightweight composite front wings, emphasising the vehicle’s robust yet agile appearance.

While there are five paint options available, my EX+ review model came in model green, it’s a kind of Khaki colour but Jaecoo calls their white Khaki – not sure why. Either way, I think this is their hero hue and it really does turn heads. The rear design also receives thoughtful attention, incorporating a hidden wiper and signature LED tail lights, demonstrating a meticulous approach to aesthetics.

Inside, the upscale appearance of the Jaecoo J7 shines through, offering a blend of refined comfort and state-of-the-art technology, along with a touch of practicality (there’s also a big lean towards LandRover styling but we won’t go there). The large sunroof lets natural light flood the cabin, the leather-style seats provide ample adjustability for a personalised driving experience (they’re heated and vented too), while features like wireless charging (with a battery cooler), an advanced infotainment system, a drinks cooler, and intuitive controls display the brand’s ambition to not just compete but to excel.

Central to the driving experience is a sophisticated suite of technology, including a touch-controlled central display and an adjustable voice recognition system. The user-friendly interface allows seamless access to various functions, from vehicle customization to entertainment options. Comprehensive safety features, such as traffic sign recognition and a clear 360-degree camera system, are designed to prioritise the well-being of both the driver and passengers.

While the 1.6L turbocharged engine (137kW/275Nm) paired with a 7-speed DCT may not sound overly powerful, particularly for a sizable SUV, just like with the 2WD model, it offers a commendable mix of performance and efficiency. The J7 is surprisingly responsive off the line, boasting a fuel efficiency of approximately 7L/100km, allowing for extended periods between refuels.

The push-button start feature enhances convenience, but the brand emphasises safety—if you don’t buckle your seatbelt, the handbrake remains engaged, keeping you in place. So, a quick reminder: always wear your seatbelt.

When it comes to driving, the J7 pulls away smartly. The accelerator can feel a bit sensitive at first, but you quickly adapt. On the road, the Jaecoo J7 is both composed and refined, with its elevated ride height providing excellent visibility. The cabin is impressively quiet, with only minimal wind noise noticeable at highway speeds and a forgiving suspension. Even navigating the many potholes and speed bumps in Auckland, the cabin remains insulated from harsh impacts, and on smoother roads, the low revs create a serene environment with hardly any engine or tire sound.

Being an AWD, the EX+ J7 comes with additional driving modes, making it a more adventurous SUV. A quick twist of the drive mode dial allows you to switch between Snow, Mud, Sand specific terrains or simply ‘Off Road’ as an all-encompassing option. Each mode comes with a cool graphic on the large centre screen.

The cabin is spacious, accommodating rear passengers comfortably—even those over 6 feet tall—while still providing ample luggage space. The Sony sound system delivers sufficient volume for an enjoyable listening experience, and despite the abundance of technology, the interface remains user-friendly. However, I found the safety suite to be a bit overcautious, with assertive lane-keeping and potential collision alerts, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

The J7 EX+ is a step up in price against the ‘regular’ EX ($43,990 vs $37,900) but so too is the list of luxuries. Not only do you get a very capable AWD system, but you get 19-inch wheels, a larger infotainment screen, a head up display, power-operated panoramic sunroof, vented seats and a heated steering wheel  – how’s that for extra cool.
