Pixels May Only Get Android 15 Update In October

Normally, Google releases updates on the same day as the source code, but this year’s schedule and testing have caused a delay. The company is holding off on the Android 15 update until mid-October to make sure it’s stable.

The update will be available for Pixel models ranging from the Pixel 6 to the latest Pixel 9 series, including the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold.

Android 15 update disrupts schedule

Android 14 was released in October 2023 and came with the Pixel 8 series. This time around, the Android 15 update is breaking the usual protocol. Typically, Google releases a new Android version and new Pixel devices around the same time. However, the Pixel 9 series was introduced in August 2024 with Android 14 pre-installed. Android 15, which we were expecting to launch with the series, will not be officially announced until September.

But that’s not all. Only the Pixel 9 series will receive the update after the announcement, but much later in October. While the official release is still pending, you can try out the more stable QPR1 build as a developer. OnePlus and other manufacturers are already beta testing their versions of it, such as OxygenOS 15. Samsung should release the One UI 7 in the coming dates.

Today, Android Authority spotted Google’s updated release notes for the Android Beta Exit update. According to the revised notes, we users waiting for the stable release of Android 15 should “ignore [the downgrade] OTA until Android 15 is available in October.” This means that if you’re on the beta version, don’t install the exit update, as it would revert your devices to an earlier version of Android. It would also delay your access to the final Android 15 release and cause you to lose all your data.

The Galaxy S21 to Galaxy S24 (including S21 FE, S22 FE) will get Android 15. In the Z series, the Z Fold 3 to Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 3 to Z Flip 6 will also receive the update. Devices from Galaxy A23 to A73 and Galaxy Tab S8 to S9 are included as well.

However, Samsung hasn’t confirmed them yet. We’ve made these predictions based on the longevity of OS support for the devices. E.g., Galaxy S24 is eligible for seven years of update, counting from its initial release.

If you use a non-Pixel or non-Samsung phone, check with your device’s manufacturer or refer to the information on your product box for details about software updates.
