This year’s Google Pixel lineup switched up a usual Google tradition in a way that most people weren’t very pleased with. The Pixel 9 series didn’t launch with Android 15, despite the new Android iteration launching alongside the latest Pixel devices for the last several years.
The Google Pixel 9 series launched with Android 14 as a result but Android 15 is finally official and ready for action. You can’t get it as a regular consumer yet though, and we can expect it to hit the new Pixels in the next few weeks.
The Source Code For Android 15 Has Been Released To The Android Open Source Project (AOSP)
We’ve been following the development of Android 15 for several months now and all that’s left is for it to be released into the hands of consumers. Well, as of right now, Android 15 is technically official. Yep, that’s right, despite the fact that it might not really seem like that since it has yet to hit any Google Pixel devices — always the first in line.
Here’s the thing, Android 15 is official because its final source code has finally been made available to the Android Open Source Project. For average users, this basically means nothing, as it still isn’t accessible to our smartphones. However, it allows the developers who need it to tinker with the code right away.
The Google Pixel 9 Family Will Get This Update In The Next Few Weeks
If you have a Google Pixel 9 device, you’ve been stuck with us heathens on Android 14, which certainly isn’t what most Pixel users expect when the new Google devices launch. Don’t worry too much though, as Google has stated that the Android 15 update will available on supported Pixel devices in the coming weeks. I’m not sure if this refers only to the Pixel 9 series or whether Google will roll it out for more Pixels at the same time.
If you’re using any other smartphone, you’re going to have to wait for the “coming months” before anything will come your way. That will likely be well towards the end of the year.
The Google Pixel 9 Devices Are Getting Their First Software Update; It’s Still Android 14 Though
As much as the Google Pixel 9 series isn’t getting that anticipated update to Android 15, they’re still getting an update nonetheless. They’ll still be on Android 14, but this update is going to bring the usual batch of security fixes as well as one major fix for a bug that seems to have been affecting “Wi-Fi performance and stability”.
This certainly doesn’t address the numerous issues that have already been reported for several of the Pixel 9 smartphones — particularly the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL — but it is something nonetheless.
You might not get this update right away as Google’s rollouts tend to be relatively gradual. At the very worst, it shouldn’t take more than a few weeks before it finds its way to your phone. Hopefully, Android 15 will follow soon after that.
