The New Narwal Freo Z Ultra Might Be The Coolest Robot Vacuum

Maybe I’m showing my age here, but I was captivated by technology from a very young age, so watching shows like The Jetsons was always super cool. Robot vacuums seem exactly like something that would exist in the world those characters lived in, and now, they’re a reality.

The newest one of these on the block is the Narwal Freo Z Ultra, shown off at IFA 2024 in Berlin. I’ve seen a lot of robot vacuums, but quite honestly, this might be one of the coolest and most capable ones that you can get. Don’t worry, we’re about to dive into what makes it so state-of-the-art.

We’ve reviewed robot vacuums here before. A robot vacuum is a vacuum before it is a robot, so no matter how smart it is, it has to be able to clean your house — that’s what you bought it for. If you’re going for this one, you won’t need to worry about that side of things. When it comes to vacuuming, you get a suction power of 12,000 Pa (which is plenty, especially for its size). Snack dust and pet hair will stand no chance.

That’s not all it can do either, as it comes with two brushes that Narwal calls the Zero Tangling Floating Brush 2.0 (hardly the nicest name) that spins at up to 4,400 RPM for effective mopping action. Part of the AI magic this comes with is its ability to recognize different types of surfaces, so no, it won’t mop your carpet. It even supports hot water mopping, at up to 167°F (75°C), and it determines the needed temperatures on its own.

Thanks to its base station, you barely need to worry about emptying out your Freo Z Ultra. It’ll find its way back to its base station on its own, empty out its payload, and even clean itself and sterilize the dirt. You’ll only need to empty the station about once every four months.

Apart from being able to identify individual messes and the kind of flooring it is about to encounter, there’s a lot more to the intelligence of this vacuum. Your house’s layout can constantly change and using LIDAR, the Freo Z Ultra can quickly scan the room, create a 3D map, and decide the route it wants to take. You can even mark off aspects of the room that it shouldn’t go to.

It’s got a pet cleaning mode too, so it can tell the places that pets frequent, to clean them more thoroughly. Yet, it can also identify where pets are sleeping or playing, and avoid going to those regions so as to not disturb them. This is exactly what we’d expect of a robot. AI is the future, after all.
