Faced with the omnipresence of smartphones and social media, the camera industry has refocused on quality over quantity. With even the biggest manufacturers grudgingly accepting their newfound place as niche players in a landscape they once dominated, they’re concentrating on making cameras that do things smartphones can’t.
As a result, today’s digital cameras are phenomenal across the board. Any brand-name camera that you can buy new today takes fantastic pictures in most normal shooting conditions and is capable of capturing at least decent video.
If you already own a modern camera, seeking out a “better” one to improve your photos is, generally speaking, a fool’s errand. To be clear, different cameras and lenses produce different images, and no single camera is an equally good option for all types of photographers. But choosing a camera today is more about buying into an ecosystem that suits your ergonomic preferences and the subjects you want to capture, rather than avoiding a lemon.
