How to Use Headphone Mode on the Roku App (And Why You Should)

Roku’s Headphone Mode lets you enjoy TV audio privately through your headphones using the Roku app on iPhone and Android. Whether you prefer wired or Bluetooth headphones, it’s a great way to watch your favorite shows without disturbing anyone.

As someone who usually stays up later than the rest of my family, I love that I can use Headphone Mode and not worry about disturbing anyone. Plus, using my own headphones provides much better sound quality than my TV’s built-in speakers, which is especially great for late-night viewing or even in noisy environments.

What You Need to Know

Before you start, ensure your Roku device and phone are on the same Wi-Fi network. This feature works with Roku Streambars and TVs, and if you’re using a TV antenna for live broadcasts, it must be connected to your Roku TV.

Headphone Mode on Roku Streambars and Soundbars only works with their built-in streaming player. If you’re using an external device like a game console or Blu-ray player, the feature won’t work. Always stream directly from your Roku device to enjoy this feature.

If you’re watching with others, up to four mobile devices can use Private Listening Mode simultaneously.

How to Activate Headphone Mode

First, plug wired headphones into your phone or connect your favorite pair of Bluetooth headphones. Open the Roku app (iPhone, Android), select your Roku device, and then tap the remote icon. Next, tap the headphone icon to switch the audio to your headphones. That’s all there is to it!

Troubleshooting Tips

While this generally works pretty well, there are some occasional hiccups. Here are some common issues you might face and their solutions:

  • No Audio: Ensure your headphones are securely connected or paired and that the volume isn’t muted.
  • Audio Sync Issues: Use the Roku app’s settings to adjust the audio delay and sync the sound with the picture.
  • Audio Cutting Out: Check your network connection and reduce other devices on the same Wi-Fi network.

With Roku’s Headphone Mode, you can enjoy your favorite shows and movies without worrying about disturbing others. Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl like me, this feature is perfect for getting the most out of your Roku device while keeping the peace in your home. Plus, with the option for multiple users, everyone can tailor their audio experience. Give it a try, and you’ll likely find it’s one of the most convenient features for private listening.
