ChargePoint has announced a new home installation program for its ChargePoint Home Flex residential charger in the United States.
The all-in-one solution promises a simple, hassle-free installation and setup process for EV owners to streamline home EV charging. The service is available exclsuively via ChargePoint’s website. You only need to answer three short questions to get an estimated installation quote and date, without a pre-installation visit required. There’s no need to hire an electrician, as ChargePoint takes care of that via its network of certified installation partners.
Anyone buying a ChargePoint Home Flex residential charger in the U.S is eligible for home installation, with quotation and installation service incorporated into their charger purchase. This service could simplify and remove the friction associated with the cumbersome experience of getting your home ready for EV charging. Tesla’s home chargers require you to “find an installer in your area” that will wire everything up before installation, though the company does provide a list of certified providers. Other companies, like Evo Charge, only provide tools to help determine which home EV charging solution best suits your needs.
According to the United States Department of Energy, about 80% of EV charging is happening at home. If you’re going to install an EV home charger, choose from Level 2 chargers as they support faster charging speeds. ChargePoint’s Home Flex is a Level 2 charger that can be installed in your home or outdoors, thanks to its integrated cable measuring 23 feet or seven meters. EV owners will appreciate having a long enough cable for flexibility in terms of charging and parking their vehicles at home.
The Home Flex can be controlled with voice commands using Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri assistant, with the ChargePoint mobile app used to adjust charging speed, schedule charging to use the cheapest energy, find nearby charging locations globally, and more.
Messing with home wiring is a risky business that could invalidate your house insurance, so most people end up hiring a certified electrician. This is especially important if you’d like to install a charging point outdoors, as doing so requires waterproof external wiring and other precautions. Also, be sure to check (or consult with a professional) whether your house has the necessary electrical infrastructure to support Level 2 chargers.
ChargePoint recently unveiled its unviersal EV connector which eliminates the hassle of carrying an adapter by bringing compatibility with all current and future EV models and brands.
