Microsoft has released a new white version of the Xbox Series X console that is discless. This new model, priced at $449.99, is a digital-only model designed for gamers who can tolerate digital copies of games or Xbox Game Pass titles.
The white color scheme aligns with the “robot white” aesthetic found on the Xbox Series S. However, unlike the Series S, the new white Series X model doesn’t have the option to add a disc drive. In terms of ports, the white console maintains the same configuration as the black model, with two USB-A ports, a HDMI 2.1 port, an Ethernet port, and a storage expansion slot at the rear. There’s also a single USB-A port and a pair button at the front for connecting controllers and accessories.
Buyers can still get the Xbox Series S for $299.99, about $150 cheaper, but it is just not as good. The new Series X option is $50 cheaper than the original model with the disc drive, starting at $449.99 instead of $499.99. You just have to deal with a digital-only version, but that seems to be the way the industry is heading. You’re mostly missing out on the ability to buy physical games, either new or used, and sell your own collection. There are also some backwards-compatible Xbox 360 games that aren’t available digitally anymore, and can only be played with the physical disc.
For those who want more storage, there is also a new $599.99 2TB “Galaxy Black” special edition of the Xbox Series X. It’s the same size as the white version but comes in black. It also has white and green dots that look like stars in the sky. It comes with a controller that has a similar aesthetic.
You can buy the new consoles from Microsoft’s online store, and they should appear at other retailers soon.
