But sometimes, you want something a little more low-tech yet fun in its own right. The Soccer Bot is one of those toys/gadgets. I would recommend the Soccer Bot as a fun low-tech gift for most kids. Your results may vary depending on your kids. Some kids literally have no interest in low-tech toys and no matter how much you encourage them, they shut down and reject it. You know your kids, so take that into consideration.

Design

The Soccer Bot is a straightforward design. The included soccer ball has sensors inside to communicate with the hub, and the ball is made from a rubber material. It doesn’t really feel like a soccer ball and it is much smaller. I do wish the soccer ball was a little bigger. There is a battery compartment inside the ball you can access through the plastic insert.

The hub is solid plastic and looks fairly robust, and inside of it are the sensors and other electronics that make the whole setup work. There is a battery compartment at the bottom and it requires 4 AA batteries to operate.

Overall, the design is pretty simple looking and there’s nothing earth-shattering about the looks. I appreciate that the design looks and feels robust enough to withstand all the kicking and whatnot.

Setup

Setting this up is not hard at all. All you have to do is insert the batteries and power up the hub. Once you have that done. Place the Soccer Bot Hub on the ground, and the zone discs in your gameplay area and finally choose your level.

There are three levels, from easy to hard. Once you choose your level, the game starts. That is effortless and no apps or smartphones needed. I told you this was old school fun.

Gameplay/Fun Factor

Once the game starts, the goal is to keep the Soccer Bot robot hub from touching the soccer ball. The longer you can go without the robot touching the ball and by keeping the ball within the boundary. The more points you get. See the video below for how it works.

It really is that simple. As I mentioned before. Some kids may get bored quickly, and I found that my older kids were in this category. My younger kids lasted a bit longer, and they enjoyed it far more. I think kids over 10 or 11 might not have the attention span to last very long. But the Soccer Bot is still loads of fun and a lot of exercise.

Fun for the price and for those kids who like to have a low-tech toy. It might not be as fun for kids who are addicted to high-tech toys and smartphones. You know your kid, so judge accordingly. My take is, the Soccer Bot is probably going to do best for kids in the 5–8 years old range.
