Apple customers using Apple Pay to purchase goods via its retail outlets will trigger a donation to The Global Fund, as part of a donation campaign ahead of World AIDS Day.
Every year, Apple marks World AIDS Day on December 1 with (PRODUCT)RED window displays and promotion of related books. To go with that effort, Apple also holds a donation drive, based on customer purchases.
Running from November 29 to December 8, Apple will be donating $5 for purchases made using Apple Pay via its website, Apple Stores, and the Apple Store app. The donations are capped at $3 million for 2024, triple the cap of the 2023 effort.
The donations will be supplied to The Global Fund, which is used to help fight HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria around the world. Since 2002, the Global Fund has saved an estimated 65 million lives, and distributed over $65 billion in funding.
Apple has had a long 18-year association with The Global Fund through PRODUCT(RED), with the proceeds of products using the color going to The Global Fund. In 2023, Apple revealed that it had raised over a quarter billion dollars for the Global Fund through the initiative.
While Apple Pay transactions and PRODUCT(RED) purchases are the main ways Apple supports the fight against AIDS, it can sometimes involve other elements. In 2023, the proceeds from selected games were also donated.
